That they all may be one, as Thou, Father, in Me and I in Thee; that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent me.
—Antiphon for prayers of the Church Unity Octave
Church Unity
Octave
18 -25 January
In a world increasingly divided and divisive, we can feel at every turn that we hear the alarm bells clanging. Manifold voices urgently tell us that our families, our communities, our churches are in danger. We may find ourselves overwhelmed at times, wondering exactly what we are supposed to do about it all. How to fix it? Surely we must do something. In all the confusion and noise, we may be tempted to forget the calm, quiet voice of Our Lord, who assured us with all the majesty and authority of the Creator of the Universe Himself, that the gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church. This week, the Church gives us this Octave of Unity to remind us of God’s unfailing promise and of our role as dutiful servants to cooperate with it. Here, we are safe, and the torments that threaten to split the world outside find their answer in our prayers. Join us for this very special octave of grace and take refuge and comfort in the Church.
